Common questions
What is the difference between SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512?
They produce hashes of different lengths: SHA-1 is 160 bits (40 hex chars), SHA-256 is 256 bits (64 hex chars), SHA-384 is 384 bits (96 hex chars), and SHA-512 is 512 bits (128 hex chars). Longer hashes offer stronger collision resistance. SHA-1 is deprecated for security use.
Is this the same as password hashing?
No. These are fast hash functions designed for data integrity, not password storage. For passwords, you need slow, salted hash functions like bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. Using SHA-256 directly for passwords is insecure.
Can I hash files?
This tool hashes text only. For file hashing, you would need a tool that reads file bytes directly. The SHA algorithms work on any binary data, but this text-based tool converts input to UTF-8 first.
